There is no cure for death.
We will all die.
How do we die with care?
Community Death Care
Death is the inevitable truth that near all living beings must face, yet in our society we avoid it. How can we fully respect life when we distance ourselves from such a fundamental part of it? I’d argue that our culture's avoidance of death is what’s made us so disastrously unprepared to deal with the onslaught of physical, social, and structural death we’ve experienced in the last few years. Many of us are feeling lost in the scale of it all which has led to mass apathy, numbness, depression, and hopelessness. Sadly, this is only the beginning. We are in the 6th mass extinction event of this planet, the climate crisis is worsening by the day, our natural resources are being depleted, wars and genocides are escalating, and the systems that caused it all are coming down and trying to take so much of what we’ve fought for with them. These senseless deaths are unacceptable and if we want real change it’s important that we reconcile with the truth that death is a required part of the cycles of life on this earth.
15 million blood cells die in the human body every second. A breath dies before a new one begins. Leaves die every fall. Death itself is not the problem, the avoidance of our own mortality is. If we are serious about fighting for the totality of life we must meet death honestly and honor the distinction between the senseless and the essential deaths of this world.
A Meeting with Death is an invitation for us to come together in community and expand our relationships with death. On the second Thursday of the month everyone is welcome to join us, bringing you thoughts, curiosities, feelings, and wisdom to share and be witnessed in. Together we will try new practices, explore different lenses, and begin building a new culture that honors and integrates death as a fundamental part of our lives.
This is a free community offering and donations are always accepted to help us keep the space going. Respirator masks are required, if you do not have one we will have some available.
